THE LOCAL PROBLEM

Lake Norman Supplies Charlotte’s Drinking Water. Everything Around It Matters.

Lake Norman is the largest manmade body of fresh water in North Carolina — roughly 32,500 acres of surface area and 520 miles of shoreline across Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln Counties. Created by Duke Energy’s Cowans Ford Dam in 1963 on the Catawba River, it supplies drinking water to Charlotte and the surrounding region through Mountain Island Lake downstream. The ponds that dot the subdivisions around the lake are part of the same system — what drains off a neighborhood in Mooresville eventually reaches the lake that Charlotte drinks from.

Ramsey Creek and Blythe Landing are where the hydrilla story starts most years. The Brawley Peninsula in Mooresville has the densest lakefront development on the Iredell County side. Cornelius has more than fifty miles of shoreline inside its town limits alone. Denver and Sherrills Ford on the western shore are growing fast but still feel rural. Davidson and Huntersville anchor the southern shore. The lake is managed by Duke Energy under a FERC license, with the Lake Norman Marine Commission providing multi-county regulatory oversight and NCDEQ running the Aquatic Weed Control Program for hydrilla.

Lake Norman is our home territory. We launch from Ramsey Creek, Blythe Landing, and the Brawley Peninsula.

The lake feeds Charlotte’s drinking water. Every pond that drains to it carries real weight.

Inland subdivision ponds and lakefront properties both benefit from yearly walk-throughs.

Four counties share the shoreline. Each has its own stormwater program. We know all four.

Boat-wake erosion, cove sedimentation, and bare banks are the calls we get most.

Hydrilla was suppressed but not eradicated. We watch for it on every shoreline visit.

Services in Lake Norman

Everything a Lake Norman Pond Could Reasonably Need.

Five service areas, one crew that knows the difference between a koi pond and a stormwater control measure. Most Lake Norman properties need a mix — a little algae management, a fountain tune-up, a shoreline patch, and a current inspection on file. Pick a tab to see what each one actually involves.

Stormwater Pond Care & SCM Compliance

Most Lake Norman HOA ponds are legally stormwater control measures. the Lake Norman region and NCDEQ expect them inspected, documented, and maintained. We handle the engineering side so your board does not have to learn it.

  • Annual and as-needed SCM inspections with photo documentation
  • Outlet structure, riser, and forebay cleanouts
  • Sediment removal and re-grading when capacity drops
  • Erosion repair on embankments and emergency spillways
  • Inspection reports formatted for County and state submittal

Pond and Lake Management Across the Lake Norman region

From half-acre subdivision ponds in Sherrills Ford to larger amenity ponds in Birkdale and The Peninsula, we treat every waterbody as its own system.

  • Water quality testing and seasonal monitoring
  • Nutrient management and algae prevention
  • Aquatic vegetation control
  • Fish habitat and stocking guidance
  • Seasonal maintenance programs

Aeration and Fountains, Built for Lake Norman Summers

Lake Norman heat is rough on ponds. The right aeration setup keeps the water moving, helps reduce algae pressure, and supports healthier fish habitat.

  • Bottom diffused aeration design and installation
  • Floating fountain selection and installation
  • Spray pattern programming and seasonal swaps
  • Compressor service, line repair, and diffuser replacement
  • Winterization and spring startup

Repairs and Restoration for Older Lake Norman Ponds

A lot of Lake Norman subdivision ponds were built in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Many are now due for structural, shoreline, and sediment work.

  • Sediment removal and forebay dredging
  • Outlet structure repair and replacement
  • Shoreline stabilization with riprap or bioengineered banks
  • Spillway and emergency overflow work
  • Full pond drawdown and restoration projects

Algae and Weed Control Across Lake Norman

Green water, brown mats, and cattails taking over the bank are some of the most common calls we get. We treat them carefully, not just chemically.

  • Filamentous and planktonic algae treatment
  • Blue-green algae rapid response
  • Submersed weed treatment
  • Emergent vegetation thinning for cattails and lily pads
  • Licensed and insured aquatic application

Why Lake Norman Owners Need a Crew That Knows the Whole Lake.

Where the Water Goes in Lake Norman

Lake Norman sits on the Catawba River, created by Duke Energy’s Cowans Ford Dam in 1963. The lake spans four counties — Mecklenburg (Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville on the south shore), Iredell (Mooresville, Troutman, Sherrills Ford on the east and north), Catawba (Terrell, the western coves), and Lincoln (Denver, the western shore). Downstream, water flows through Cowans Ford Dam into Mountain Island Lake, which is Charlotte Water’s primary drinking-water intake. That chain — Lake Norman to Mountain Island to Charlotte taps — is why everything that happens to the lake’s water quality matters far beyond the shoreline. Duke Energy operates the dam under a FERC license. The Lake Norman Marine Commission provides multi-county regulatory oversight. NCDEQ runs the Aquatic Weed Control Program for hydrilla. And each of the four counties runs its own stormwater program for the properties within its borders.

Lake Norman Properties and Neighborhoods We Know

We know the Brawley Peninsula (Mooresville), The Peninsula and Jetton Cove (Cornelius), Birkdale and Blythe Landing (Huntersville), the Davidson waterfront, the Sherrills Ford and Terrell coves (Catawba County), and the Denver and Westport stretches (Lincoln County). Inland, we know the subdivision pond inventories in all four counties — the 1990s and 2000s HOA ponds that are now reaching mid-life maintenance. We know the marinas, the golf courses (Trump National at The Point, Northstone in Huntersville), the office parks, and the medical campuses that ring the lake.

A Few Things About Lake Norman That We Like

Lake Norman is the recreational, economic, and cultural heart of the north-Charlotte metro. Lake Norman State Park in Troutman has nearly 2,000 acres of woods and shoreline. Jetton Park in Cornelius is where families go on Saturdays. The Peninsula Yacht Club hosts regattas. The fishing is underrated — stripers, largemouth, catfish, crappie. The sunsets from the Brawley side at The Point are genuinely worth pulling over for. And the four-county patchwork of towns around the lake — each with its own character, its own downtown, its own relationship to the water — is one of the things that makes Lake Norman feel like a region rather than just a lake.

Waterbodies We Know by Name

We serve all of Charlotte and the surrounding Mecklenburg County communities — Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville — plus the Lake Norman waterfront north of city limits and the Mountain Island Lake stretch out toward Mount Holly. East into Cabarrus for Concord and Kannapolis work, and south to the Lake Wylie shoreline.

A few months ago, we transitioned to Clearwater as our pond vendor, and the experience has been nothing short of exceptional. Their service is outstanding! Tyler does an incredible job maintaining our 14 ponds, and Trever is always a pleasure to work with. Both go above and beyond to assist whenever needed, and their dedication is truly appreciated. I highly recommend Clearwater Lake & Pond!

FAQS

Lake Norman Questions. Lake Norman Answers.

Do you cover the whole lake, or just specific towns?

The whole lake. We work all four counties — Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln — and both the shoreline properties and the inland subdivision ponds. We file reports to the correct county program depending on where your property falls.

Is hydrilla still a problem on Lake Norman?

Hydrilla was suppressed through the NCDEQ-led grass carp stocking program (more than 22,000 sterile carp released between 2018 and 2020), but it has not been eradicated from the region. The lake is monitored annually. We watch for hydrilla on every shoreline visit and coordinate with NCDEQ when we spot it.

My cove has erosion. What does shoreline restoration look like?

It depends on the severity and the cove. Mild erosion usually calls for riprap or bioengineered bank stabilization. More serious cases may need a full dock-approach rebuild, graded bank reconstruction, or native-plant bioengineering. We assess the shoreline in person, recommend the right approach, and do the work in the cooler months when the lake is typically lower.

My inland HOA pond is nowhere near the lake. Does it still matter?

Yes. Inland subdivision ponds around Lake Norman drain to tributaries that feed the lake. What happens in a Huntersville or Mooresville HOA pond eventually reaches the Catawba, then Lake Norman, then Mountain Island Lake and Charlotte’s drinking water. Keeping inland ponds healthy is part of keeping the lake healthy.

How do I get a quote for my Lake Norman property?

Tell us about it and we will come look. Use the request form below or call (704) 450-1598. For shoreline work, photos and rough water-frontage measurement get us started. For inland HOA ponds, year built and pond size cover the basics. We do not quote sight-unseen on lake or shoreline work — we need to see the cove.
